‘Big” software actually wants to build in as much complexity as possible, and back it up with consulting, implementation and support services. High prices afford them vast marketing budgets, over-paid sales people and inefficient development and maintenance processes. The new software companies approach their market from a different perspective – remove the complexity, reduce the cost, make the software easy to use. Now they don’t need the marketing budget, the consultants and the IT support department. Users can get great software, with added value, for a lot less cost.
